What You Need to Succeed in VRI

This workshop looks at best practices for remote interpreting from home. Increasingly, many onsite interpreters have made this shift as independent contractors since the pandemic. Telehealth is booming, and despite the easy commute when one works from home, assignments have gotten tougher, as remote interpreting requests have grown in scope and increasingly are scheduled for complex encounters.

We’ll look at how to: enhance one’s remote persona, and utilize scripts to enforce best practices (pre-session, confidentiality, transparency, and managing the flow). Local and Federal law governing call center employment practices will be examined. Links will be shared for materials and exercises to assist interpreters with skills assessment and enhancement. Guidelines for choosing equipment, workstation set-up, and connectivity requirements, observing HIPAA, and managing clients during the session are shared.

Instructor: Eliana Lobo

Instructor’s Bio: Eliana is an experienced CoreCHI-P certified interpreter and certified Trainer of Trainers. She is a Portuguese language teacher and an adjunct professor of healthcare interpreting at Highline College who has presented at many healthcare and international interpreter conferences.

Eliana is a certified TEFL instructor and an adult literacy teacher. She earned two M.A.s from Brown University:  in Bilingual Education; and Portuguese & Brazilian Studies. Beginning her career as a Spanish and Portuguese medical interpreter at Rhode Island Hospital, the teaching hospital for Brown University’s Medical School. Later, in New York City, she supervised Spanish and Portuguese translators at a law firm in the 30 Rock building and worked in Latin American Security Services for a major international bank. Leaving New York for Seattle to become the Trainer-Supervisor at Harborview Medical Center’s Department of Interpreter Services, she trained and supervised their in-house staff of 49 interpreters for eight years.  Stepping into a position as the National Director of Interpreter Quality for a language services provider, and subsequently, as Director of Multicultural Awareness Programs & Services for another LSP, she's currently the Director of Lobo Language Access in Tacoma Washington, providing consultation on language access, interpreter training curricula, and customized training for providers on how to partner with interpreters for public and private clients. 

Eliana served as a Commissioner with CCHI, the Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, from 2015-2021. She has volunteered with the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care’s “Home for Trainers” webinar workgroup, since 2014. "Home for Trainers" has presented and hosted over 60 webinars offering continuing education credits for interpreters, and for trainers of healthcare interpreters. Eliana is currently serving her second term on the Board of the NCIHC where she Chairs the Standards and Training Committee and was recently elected to her first term as President of NCIHC.

• Know how to configure your home or call center workstation for the best user experience.
• Understand the importance of continually self-assessing one’s interpreting skills; knowing where to find training materials to develop and improve that skillset

• Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI): 4 CE hours
• International Medical Interpreters Association: 0.4 IMIA/NBCMI CEUs
• American Translators Association: 4 ATA CEPs
• Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf: 0.4 RID* CEUs

This course is limited to 25 participants. Once the course has reached capacity, those interested will be added to a waitlist in the order in which their inquiry is received.

Attendance Policy for Live Online Training Programs

In order to receive a course completion certificate, participants in our live online programs must submit all applicable documentation; complete all coursework requirements; be visible on their webcam for the entire program; and complete the applicable attendance requirement:

• For live online programs shorter than 10 hours, participants must attend all live scheduled hours.
• For live online programs 10 hours or longer, participants may miss no more than 10% of the total live scheduled hours. (For example, attendance of 18 hours is required for a 20-hour program; attendance of 36 hours is required for a 40-hour program.)

Disruptive Behavior Policy

In order to uphold the collaborative nature of our online training programs, onboardings, support sessions and webinars, Cross-Cultural Communications reserves the right to remove any participant for abusive or aggressive behavior, spoken or written, towards CCC staff, trainers or other participants. We recognize that the past few years have been difficult for everyone. However, our participants, trainers and staff have the right to a safe and respectful learning and working environment. By registering for our live online training programs, you agree to allow Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC to share your contact information with participants in the same training session for purposes of creating a collaborative online training experience for all participants.
