Linguistic AI and Prompt Engineering for Language Specialists: What the Community Interpreter Should Know

This workshop is an introduction to Large Language Models and proper AI terminology for linguists (both translators and interpreters) who work with them. It also covers the major factors a freelance linguist needs to consider when deciding when to use AI. Finally, it speaks about best practices for creating effective prompts and gives multiple examples of how to craft prompts that can potentially be used by linguists in their work. The workshop ends with a review of where people can stay informed about AI in T & I and with a Q & A period to allow for (as much as possible) people to ask questions that have not been answered.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and define proper professional terms used in this relatively new sector of the profession.
  • Understand and explain the risks of AI use in their own business.
  • To craft effective and useful prompts in their field of specialization to aid them in their work.
  • Identify where they can find information and guidelines about AI use in T & I to guide them and potential clients through the process of deciding what level of AI involvement a project should have.

CEUs:

  • Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI): 3 CE hours
  • International Medical Interpreters Association: 0.3 IMIA/NBCMI CEUs
  • American Translators Association: 3 ATA CEPs
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf: 0.3 RID* CEUs

This course is limited to 25 participants. Once the course has reached capacity, those interested will be added to a waitlist in the order in which their inquiry is received.
